Choosing a Paper Weight for Your Project
Ask “what paper should I use?” and most answers reach straight for colour and pattern, when the decision that actually determines whether a project works is weight. A gorgeous patterned sheet in the wrong weight will fight you the entire way through a project — folding lumpy where it should be crisp, or flopping where it should stand — while a plain sheet in the right weight behaves exactly as expected from the first cut. This is a practical way to choose weight before you buy anything, starting from what the paper actually has to do rather than from a label.
Start from the job, not the shelf
Every papercraft project asks its paper to do one of a handful of jobs, and each job has a natural weight range attached to it. A paper that needs to fold thin and crisp through many layers — origami being the obvious case — wants light paper, because bulk compounds fast across a dozen folds. A paper that needs to stand upright unsupported — a card base, a box, a cover — wants real stiffness, which only comes from real weight. A paper that needs to roll into a tight, even coil — quilling — wants something in between: enough body to hold a curl, not so much that it resists rolling. And a paper that needs to take a fold hundreds of times without failing — a book’s pages, opened and closed for years — wants a weight chosen for durability under repeated flexing rather than for a single crisp crease. Naming the job first turns “what paper?” from a guess into a lookup.
The gsm bands worth knowing
Once you are thinking in gsm, a small number of bands cover almost everything you will ever buy. Below 50 gsm is tissue-weight, translucent and easily torn — useful for some wrapping and decoupage, rarely for a structural project. From about 50 to 100 gsm is ordinary writing and copy weight, the default for office paper and a fine starting point for origami. From 100 to 150 gsm is heavy text moving into light card — patterned craft paper, quilling strips at the firmer end, and card layers that sit on top of a sturdier base. From 150 to 250 gsm is properly cardstock territory, where postcards and light card bases live. From 250 to 350 gsm is heavy cardstock and cover weight, the range most greeting-card bases are cut from. And above 350 gsm you are into board, which behaves more like binder’s board than paper. A worked example: what does 250 gsm actually mean?
Say you are holding an unlabelled sheet and a scale tells you it weighs in at 250 gsm. Run that single figure through the basis-weight formula for each grade and it comes back as roughly 92.5 lb if it were sold as cover stock, roughly 168.9 lb if sold as text, roughly 66.5 lb if sold as bond, and roughly 138.3 lb if sold as index — four wildly different-looking numbers for one physical sheet. But the gsm figure also tells you something a pound number cannot on its own: at 250 gsm, this sheet falls into the “heavy cardstock / cover” category regardless of which grade it happens to be sold under, which means it will behave like sturdy card — fine as a card base, fine for a book cover, too heavy and stiff for origami, too heavy for a smooth quilling coil. The gsm figure, not the pound figure, is what actually predicts behaviour, which is exactly why it is worth converting to before you decide anything.
Buying by a pound figure: the same number, two different papers
The reverse problem shows up constantly when shopping: two products both listed as “80 lb” can be nothing alike. An 80 lb text sheet works out to roughly 118.4 gsm — solidly in the heavy-text-to-light-card band, good for patterned craft paper or card layers. An 80 lb cover sheet works out to roughly 216.3 gsm — properly into cardstock, good for a card base. Both are “80 lb.” Only one of them will stand up on a mantelpiece. Whenever you see a pound figure on a listing, treat the grade word next to it as just as important as the number itself, and if the grade is missing entirely, treat the listing as incomplete rather than guessing which one it means.
Sizing weight up or down within one project
Few finished pieces use a single weight throughout, and knowing where to deliberately change weight is part of choosing well. A layered card wants cover weight for the base, lighter text weight for decorative layers on top, and can drop lighter again for an envelope liner that never has to stand on its own. A bound book wants a lighter, opaque text weight for the pages, a heavier decorative sheet for the endpapers, and full board for the covers. Treat each component of a project as its own small weight decision, made by the job that specific piece is doing, rather than trying to find one weight that serves the whole project adequately but excels at nothing.
When you don't know either number
Sometimes you are simply handed a sheet with no label at all — a gift, an offcut, something inherited from someone else’s stash. In that case, weight it against paper you do know: hold it next to a sheet of ordinary printer paper (about 80 gsm) and a sheet of standard cardstock (around 200–220 gsm) and judge roughly where it falls between or beyond them. It will not give you a precise gsm figure, but it will usually be enough to place the sheet in the right band for the job you have in mind, and if you need more precision than a hand comparison can give, a simple postal or kitchen scale plus the sheet’s dimensions gets you an exact figure with a little arithmetic, or a conversion the other way once you know roughly which grade it resembles.
A short checklist before you buy
Four quick questions cover almost every weight decision. What job is this piece of paper doing — folding thin, standing up, rolling into a coil, or flexing repeatedly? Is the figure on the label a gsm number, or a pound number with a grade attached? If it is a pound number, has it been converted to gsm yet, or are you about to compare two figures that are not actually on the same scale? And does the project have more than one component — base, layer, lining — that might genuinely want different weights rather than one compromise weight for everything? Running through those four before adding anything to a basket catches the great majority of weight mismatches before they cost you a wasted sheet.
Mistakes that come from skipping this step
A few weight mistakes show up often enough to name directly. Buying a single mid-weight paper for an entire multi-part project — card base and decorative layer both in the same 200 gsm stock — usually produces a base that is slightly thin for standing up and a layer that is slightly stiff and bulky on top, when two different weights would have suited each part better. Comparing two suppliers’ pound figures without checking they use the same grade is another common one, since “lighter-sounding” and “heavier-sounding” pound numbers can be reversed once you convert them properly. And assuming a paper described only by colour or finish (“shimmer cardstock,” “kraft paper”) will behave like other paper of that description, without checking its actual weight, is a frequent surprise — craft ranges vary considerably in gsm within a single product line even when the visual finish looks consistent across the whole range.
Keeping a small stock of "known" weights
Once you have converted and confirmed a few papers you use regularly, it is worth deliberately keeping a small, known-weight stock on hand for each job type described above — a go-to light sheet for origami, a go-to cover weight for card bases, a go-to text weight for layers and linings. This does two things at once: it removes the conversion step entirely for routine projects, since you already know exactly what each sheet in that stock weighs and how it behaves, and it gives you a reliable comparison point whenever an unfamiliar new paper shows up, since you can weigh it against something in your known stock rather than starting from nothing. A well-curated small stash of known weights is worth more, project for project, than a much larger pile of paper whose exact weight you have never actually checked.
Weight is a starting point, not the finish line
Getting the weight right removes the single biggest source of mismatched projects, but it is worth remembering it is the first filter, not the only one. Two sheets at the same gsm can still differ in caliper (their actual measured thickness), surface finish, and grain direction, all of which affect the finished result once the weight itself is right. Treat a correct weight as clearing the most common failure mode — a card base too flimsy to stand, an origami sheet too thick to fold cleanly through many layers — and then let the more specific checks covered elsewhere on this site, grain direction and surface testing among them, refine the choice the rest of the way for a project where those finer details genuinely matter.
