Matching Your Scoring Technique to the Paper's Weight
“Should I score this?” does not have one universal answer — it depends entirely on the weight of the specific sheet in your hand, and a lot of paper arrives with only a pound figure on the packet, or no label at all. Here is a practical way to go from an unlabelled or pound-only sheet to the right scoring technique for it, worked through with two real examples.
Step one: get to a gsm figure
If a sheet is only labelled in pounds, the grade word attached to that figure changes what it actually means, so the first step is always converting to gsm before doing anything else. A sheet sold as “110 lb cover” converts to roughly 297.5 gsm. A sheet sold as “90 lb index” converts to roughly 162.7 gsm — despite the larger-sounding number, it is actually the lighter of the two sheets, because index and cover use different basis sizes. Step two: place it on the weight-to-technique scale
Once you have a gsm figure, a handful of bands tell you what treatment the sheet actually needs. Under about 100 gsm — ordinary writing and copy weight — no scoring is needed at all; the paper folds cleanly with a fingernail. From roughly 100 to 150 gsm, heavy text moving into light card, scoring is optional but a light score improves a long, single crease that would otherwise show a faint pale line. From 150 to 250 gsm, proper cardstock, scoring stops being optional — fold it raw and a cracked, fibrous line shows every time. From 250 up to just under 350 gsm, heavy cardstock and cover weight, scoring is essential and a firm burnish afterward matters more too. At 350 gsm and above, true board, you are no longer really folding at all — you are scoring a deep enough groove to hinge the material, closer to a bookbinder’s technique than an ordinary paper fold.
Worked example one: a light card layer at 90 gsm
Say you are working with a patterned sheet sold as “90 lb index,” intended as a decorative layer on top of a sturdier card base. Converting that pound figure gives roughly 163 gsm — solidly in the “proper cardstock” band, heavier than it might sound from the index grade name alone. That places it firmly in scoring territory: fold it raw as a top layer and there is a real risk of a visible cracked line running across the design. Score it first, fold with the ridge tucked inward, and burnish the closed fold — standard technique, but only necessary once the gsm conversion revealed the sheet was heavier than a casual glance at “index” paper might suggest.
Worked example two: a heavy cover at 300 gsm
Now take a genuinely heavy card base at 300 gsm — converting back the other way, that is roughly 110.9 lb if sold as cover stock, or roughly 202.7 lb if the same weight were sold as text, another reminder of how differently the same sheet reads depending on grade. At 300 gsm you are deep into the “heavy cardstock / cover” band, close to board but not quite there. This sheet needs a firm, deliberate score, ideally on a proper scoring board rather than an improvised tool, and a hard burnish pass after folding — a light score that works fine on a 200 gsm card will likely be too shallow here, leaving part of the fold to crack anyway. Some crafters working at this weight score both faces lightly rather than one face firmly, splitting the fibre-displacement work across both sides of the sheet for an even cleaner result at this thickness.
What to do when the two examples' weights are close but the technique differs
Notice that 163 gsm and 300 gsm both land inside “needs scoring” territory generally, but the specific technique — light score versus firm, deliberate double-pass score — still differs meaningfully between them. This is why converting to gsm is only step one, not the whole answer: the category tells you whether to score at all, but the weight within that category still tells you how hard, and whether one pass is enough. Treat the gsm figure as a dial to turn the scoring pressure up or down, not a simple yes-or-no switch.
Why two sheets in the same category can still behave differently
Weight category is a strong predictor, but it is not the only variable at play, and it helps to know what else can shift the picture within one band. Caliper — the sheet’s actual measured thickness — does not track gsm perfectly, because how densely the fibres are packed also matters: a bulky, uncoated sheet can be noticeably thicker than a dense, coated sheet of the same gsm, and the bulkier one generally wants a slightly firmer score even though the two share a weight category. Coated and uncoated surfaces also respond differently to a score line — a coated finish can show a small amount of surface cracking or a colour change right along the score itself if the tool is too sharp or the pressure too heavy, which a plain uncoated sheet in the same category usually will not show. When two sheets nominally in the same band behave differently under the same scoring pressure, caliper and surface coating are the first two places to look before assuming the gsm conversion was wrong.
Building your own quick-reference by weight
If you regularly work with a handful of specific stocks, converting each one once and writing the resulting gsm figure and category directly on the packet or a nearby note saves re-deriving it every time you reach for that paper. Adjusting technique for a project with several folds
Everything above has assumed a single fold on a single sheet, but a project with multiple folds — a gatefold card, a small pamphlet, a box with several panels — can genuinely benefit from a slightly different score depth at different folds on the very same sheet, if those folds carry different amounts of stress. A fold that will be opened and closed repeatedly, like a card’s main spine, is worth scoring a touch more firmly than a fold that is set once and never flexed again, like a box panel glued flat after assembly. Weight category still sets the baseline pressure for the sheet as a whole, but treating every fold on a multi-fold project as identically important, when in practice some see far more repeated stress than others, is a subtler mismatch than getting the category wrong entirely, and worth thinking through once you have the basic weight-to-pressure mapping down.
A final sanity check before a full batch
Whatever the calculated category and technique suggest, fold one test piece from the actual sheet before committing an entire batch to it — the same advice that applies throughout papercraft applies here too, and for good reason: a gsm conversion and a category lookup predict behaviour very reliably, but they are still a prediction, not a guarantee, for a specific sheet you have not personally folded yet. A test fold takes under a minute and confirms the predicted technique actually holds for the paper in front of you, which is a small cost against the alternative of discovering a mismatch on piece forty of fifty. If the test fold surprises you either way — cleaner or worse than the category predicted — trust what you just saw over the prediction and adjust the pressure for the rest of the batch accordingly.
Keeping the conversion step from feeling like a chore
The whole workflow above — convert, categorise, test, score — sounds like a lot of steps for something as small as one fold, but in practice the first three take under a minute once you have done them a handful of times, and only the first two are needed at all for paper you already know well. The value is front-loaded: the first time you meet an unfamiliar stock, the conversion tells you exactly what you are dealing with instead of leaving you to guess from a pound figure or a vague sense of “this feels kind of heavy.” Every subsequent project using that same stock then skips straight to the technique you already worked out, which is exactly the payoff a few minutes of arithmetic on unfamiliar paper is buying you.
When you have no label and no scale
If you cannot weigh or convert a sheet at all — a scrap with no packaging, paper handed to you by someone else — fold a test corner on a genuine offcut before committing the whole sheet. A clean fold with no visible line means you can likely skip scoring or use a light one; any visible cracking or resistance on the test fold means the sheet needs a proper score, and the amount of resistance you feel while folding the test corner is a reasonable proxy for how firm that score should be. It is less precise than a real gsm figure, but it gets you to a workable answer without any equipment beyond the sheet itself.
Scoring technique is not one-size-fits-all, and the sizing signal is almost always available if you take the extra step of converting whatever weight figure you do have into gsm first. Do that conversion, place the result on the scale above, and the right amount of scoring pressure follows directly — no guessing, no ruined fold on a sheet you cannot easily replace.
