Beginner Origami: The Folds and Bases to Learn First
Origami looks like hundreds of unrelated models, but almost all of the traditional ones are built from the same small vocabulary of folds and a few starting shapes called bases. Learn that vocabulary and a diagram stops being a wall of arrows and becomes a set of instructions you can actually read. Here is the core worth learning first.
Start with a true square
Every classic model begins with an accurate square, and a sloppy square is the most common reason a finished piece looks lopsided. A 15 cm (6 inch) square is the standard teaching size — large enough for clean folds, small enough to finish quickly — and thin “kami” paper around 60 to 70 gsm creases crisply without fighting you.
The two folds everything is made of
There are really only two folds. A valley fold brings the paper up and toward you, forming a trough like a V; a mountain fold pushes it down and away, forming a ridge. Every arrow in a diagram is one or the other, and diagrams use a dashed line for a valley and a dash-dot line for a mountain. Practise folding both crisply: line the edges up first, hold them, then run your thumbnail or a bone folder along the crease from the middle outward so no bubble forms.
Preliminary and waterbomb bases
Fold a square in half both ways and along both diagonals, and you can collapse it into one of two starting shapes. Bring the corners down and together and you get the preliminary base, a small square with an open, layered mouth — the start of the crane, the lily, and countless flowers. Push the sides in instead and you get the waterbomb base, a triangle that starts the classic paper balloon and many animals. These two bases begin a surprising share of all traditional models, so they are worth folding until they are automatic.
Squash and petal folds
From the preliminary base, two moves do most of the shaping. A squash fold opens a flap and flattens it symmetrically, like pressing a tent flat from above. A petal fold lifts a single layer up while the sides pinch inward, narrowing a wide flap into a point — it is the move that turns the preliminary base into the slender bird base. They feel fiddly the first few times; the trick is to pre-crease firmly along the lines the fold will follow, so the paper falls into place instead of tearing.
The bird base and your first models
Petal-fold all four flaps of a preliminary base and you have the bird base, which is one reverse fold away from the head and tail of the traditional crane — the model most people learn first and never forget. Good early projects, in rough order of difficulty, are the paper boat, the masu box, the jumping frog, the waterbomb balloon, and then the crane. Each one drills the folds above in a slightly different combination.
Sizing your square to the model you actually want
Diagrams almost always tell you to start with “a square,” but rarely tell you what size square gets you the finished model you have in mind. The relationship is a simple ratio: a model’s finished footprint is roughly a fixed fraction of the starting square’s edge, a “size factor” that stays constant for a given model because the folding sequence is always the same. A traditional crane’s wingspan comes out to about 0.75 times the starting square’s side, a paper boat’s length and a masu box’s side both land around 0.5 times, and a waterbomb balloon’s width lands around 0.35 times. So if you want a crane with a 12 cm wingspan, you work backward — 12 divided by 0.75 — and cut a 16 cm square before you fold a single crease. Want a 20 cm masu box? Divide by its 0.5 factor and start from a 40 cm square. This matters more than it sounds, because most folders learn the size-by-guesswork the hard way — folding a whole crane only to find it is a third the size of the box it needs to sit next to. Working from the target backward removes that entirely, and it is the same arithmetic whether you are matching a set of decorations to each other or fitting a model into a display case with a fixed footprint.
Starting from a real sheet of paper, not a pre-cut square
Origami paper packs already come as perfect squares, but plenty of good folding paper — office paper, wrapping paper, patterned scrapbook sheets — comes as a rectangle. Cut the largest possible square from a standard A4 sheet and you get a 210 mm square with an 87 mm offcut strip, using up about 71 percent of the sheet’s area; do the same from a US Letter sheet and you get a 216 mm square with a 63 mm offcut, using closer to 77 percent. Letter is closer to square than A4, so it wastes noticeably less paper when you square it off — worth knowing if you are folding through a lot of sheets and trying not to waste stock. Keep the offcut strips, too: a long, narrow strip is exactly what quilling needs, so a stack of origami offcuts is a ready-made stash for a different craft entirely.
The reverse fold: what actually makes a crane's head and tail
The bird base gets you most of the way to a crane, but the head, tail, and wings still need one more move: the reverse fold. It comes in two versions. An inside reverse fold pushes a point down between its own layers, tucking it inward — this is how a bird base’s legs become a crane’s tail and neck. An outside reverse fold wraps a point around the outside of the layers instead of tucking inside — less common in traditional models, but it shows up in some animal heads. Both start the same way: pre-crease the point with a valley fold where you want the new angle to sit, then open the layers slightly and guide the point through (inside) or around (outside) along that crease. It looks fiddly described in words; watching one happen once, or feeling the pre-crease guide the paper into place, makes it click far faster than reading about it does.
The diagonal is a hidden ruler
A surprising number of intermediate folds ask you to align a point with the far corner of the square, or to fold along a line that is really the diagonal in disguise. It helps to know its length ahead of time: a square’s diagonal is its side multiplied by the square root of two, so a 15 cm (150 mm) square has a diagonal of about 212 mm — noticeably longer than the side, which is exactly why a preliminary base folded along both diagonals produces a shape smaller than the original square. When a diagram’s instructions seem to expect a longer reach than the side alone would give, it is very often measuring along that diagonal.
A brief note on wet-folding
Everything above assumes thin, dry-folded paper, which is how the vast majority of traditional models are built. There is a separate, more advanced technique called wet-folding, where a heavier, sized paper is lightly dampened before folding so it holds soft, rounded curves rather than sharp, flat creases — it is how sculptural animal models get their rounded bodies instead of the faceted look of dry-folded paper. It is worth knowing the term exists so you are not confused when a pattern calls for it, but it is not something to reach for as a beginner: it needs a heavier paper than the 60–70 gsm kami recommended above, and the technique for controlling how much the paper dampens and dries takes its own practice separate from learning the folds themselves. If you want to try it eventually, watercolour paper and other absorbent, sized stocks are the usual starting point, since they take on a light misting evenly without the surface breaking down the way thin kami would.
Habits that make folds clean
Work on a hard, flat surface, not your lap. Fold away from yourself so you can see the edges meet. Crease in one firm pass rather than several timid ones. When a step says to fold and unfold, make the crease sharp anyway — those pre-creases are what let a later collapse happen cleanly. And if a model goes wrong, unfold to the last base you recognise and restart from there rather than forcing a bent flap.
None of this takes special talent, only repetition. Fold the preliminary and bird bases a dozen times each, get comfortable with the squash and petal folds, and most beginner and intermediate diagrams will suddenly make sense — because you will already know the words they are written in.
