Quilling for Beginners: Rolling Your First Coils
Quilling — rolling narrow strips of paper into coils and shaping them into designs — is one of the cheapest crafts to try and one of the most quietly absorbing. A pack of strips, a rolling tool, and a bottle of glue is genuinely all you need to make flowers, letters, and framed pictures. Here is how to begin.
Strips and tools
Quilling strips are usually 3 to 5 mm wide and come pre-cut in packs, which is far easier than cutting your own at the start. The paper is a light-to-medium text weight; heavier stock is hard to roll tightly. To roll, most beginners use a slotted tool, a little metal shaft with a notch you feed the strip into — it grips the end so you can wind. Purists use a needle tool or just their fingers for a neater centre, but the slotted tool is the forgiving choice while you learn. Add a fine-tipped glue applicator, a non-stick board or a piece of cork, and tweezers for placing pieces, and your kit is complete.
Rolling a tight coil
Feed one end of a strip into the slot, then turn the tool with one hand while lightly guiding the strip with the other so it winds evenly. Keep gentle, consistent tension. When you reach the end, hold the coil closed, dab a tiny spot of glue on the tail, press it down, and slide the coil off the tool. That is a tight coil: a firm, solid disc that keeps its shape. Tight coils are the building blocks of letters, borders, and dense fills.
Rolling a loose coil
For most decorative shapes you want a loose coil instead. Roll it the same way, but before gluing the tail, slide the coil off the tool and let it relax and open up on your board. Once it has expanded to the size you want, then glue the tail. The looser the coil, the more open and airy the finished shape — and because the coil relaxes to a size set by how much paper you rolled, cutting consistent strip lengths is what keeps a row of shapes even.
Pinching the basic shapes
Almost every quilled design is a loose coil pinched into a new outline:
- Pinch one point and you get a teardrop — the classic flower petal.
- Pinch two opposite points and you get a marquise or eye shape — leaves and slender petals.
- Pinch three or four points for a triangle or square.
- Press a curve into a teardrop and you get a comma-like scroll shape.
Five teardrops glued point-to-centre make a simple flower; a few marquise shapes become leaves; loose scrolls fill the spaces between. That small repertoire already covers a huge range of designs.
Planning strip lengths
The size of a finished coil depends on how long a strip you roll, and the relationship is not linear — because the paper fills a disc, doubling a coil’s diameter takes roughly four times the strip length. Common early mistakes and how to fix them
A few problems come up so often for new quillers that it is worth naming them ahead of time. A coil that springs open too far after gluing usually means the tail was released before the coil had finished relaxing on the board — let it sit and open fully before you commit glue. A pinched shape that will not hold its point, springing back round, usually means the pinch was too brief; hold firm pressure for a couple of seconds rather than a quick squeeze, giving the paper time to take the new crease. Coils of noticeably different final sizes despite using strips you thought were equal length almost always trace back to inconsistent cutting — measure and mark strip lengths rather than eyeballing them, especially once you start working from a planned diameter. And a design that looks flat and crowded rather than airy usually has too many tight coils and not enough loose, open ones; loose coils and the negative space around them are doing more visual work than it seems.
Slightly uneven pressure while pinching a shape is also worth checking for directly: hold a finished teardrop or marquise up and compare both sides against each other, since an asymmetric pinch is often easier to spot by eye afterward than to feel by hand while it is happening.
Working out a strip length before you cut
Because a coil relaxes to a size set by how much paper went into it, you can plan the exact strip length for a target finished diameter rather than trimming by eye. The relationship comes straight from how a coil is built: the paper fills a ring, so the strip length needed is roughly proportional to the square of the target diameter, which is why doubling a coil’s size takes about four times the strip, not twice. Concretely, at a standard 0.25 mm strip thickness with no core, a 10 mm coil takes about 314 mm of strip, a 20 mm coil takes about 1257 mm — almost exactly four times as much for double the diameter — and a 40 mm coil takes about 5027 mm, sixteen times the 10 mm figure. Once you have felt that jump once, matching a row of five petals to the same size stops being a matter of luck.
Thickness matters just as much as target size. For that same 20 mm coil, a lighter 0.2 mm strip needs about 1571 mm to reach the same diameter, while a heavier 0.3 mm strip needs only about 1047 mm — thinner paper takes more winds, and more length, to build the same size coil, because each wind adds less thickness to the growing ring. Cutting your own strips
Pre-cut packs are the easy start, but cutting your own opens up any paper you already own. Cut with the grain running along the length of the strip, not across it — a strip cut against the grain resists rolling into a smooth circle and tends to kink at odd points instead of curving evenly. A paper trimmer with a strip-cutting blade or a simple grid cutting mat gives the most consistent width, which matters more than you might expect: a strip that wanders from 3 to 4 mm wide rolls into a coil with an uneven edge, because the outer wind is thicker along the parts cut wider. Cut a test strip first and check it under a straightedge before committing a whole sheet.
Using a core for larger, stiffer coils
Most beginner coils start from nothing at the centre — a “zero core.” For a larger coil that still needs to feel firm rather than floppy, some quillers start winding around a small core instead, such as a slim dowel, a large needle, or even a few pre-glued wraps of scrap strip. Adding a core changes the maths only slightly: it simply means the coil starts from a bigger initial radius, so the length needed to reach the same finished diameter is a little less than starting from zero — a 20 mm coil with a 3 mm core takes about 1228 mm of strip instead of about 1257 mm from a zero core. The difference is modest at typical quilling sizes, but it is there, and it matters more as the core gets relatively larger.
Displaying and protecting a finished piece
Quilled pieces are delicate in a way flat card art is not, since the coils stand slightly proud of the backing and can be crushed or knocked out of place. A shadow-box style frame, with real depth between the glass and the backing board, protects a piece far better than a standard flat frame that presses glass directly against the raised coils. If you are mounting onto a card rather than framing, a touch of extra glue under any coil edge that sits particularly high reduces the risk of it catching and lifting during handling or a trip through the post. Keep finished pieces out of direct sunlight for the same reason you would store blank paper away from it — the same fading that dulls a stored sheet will dull a finished design just as easily, and rather more visibly.
Gluing and assembling
Use glue sparingly — a dot on the tail to close a coil, and the tiniest touch on the edge when joining pieces. Too much glue warps the paper and dries shiny. Assemble on a non-stick surface or over a printed template you can lift the finished piece off. Let each join set for a few seconds before adding the next, and don’t rush; the pleasure of quilling is entirely in the slow, tidy building up of small shapes into something bigger than the sum of its strips.
