How a folded booklet is laid out
Fold a stack of sheets in half and the page numbers no longer run 1, 2, 3 across the sheets — they nest. The outermost sheet holds the first and last pages back to back with the second and second-to-last, and each sheet inward steps toward the middle. Getting that order right is the whole trick of imposition.
The table does the bookkeeping for you, so you can print or hand-letter each sheet knowing it will read correctly once folded and stitched down the spine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why must the page count be a multiple of four?
A folded sheet carries two pages on the front and two on the back — four in all. So a saddle-stitched booklet's page count is always a multiple of four, and any shortfall is made up with blank pages. The calculator pads the count and tells you how many blanks it added.
What does the imposition table tell me?
It lists, for every folded sheet, which page numbers sit on the left and right of the front and back. The outer sheet always carries the first and last pages together; work inward from there. Lay your pages out this way and they read in order once the stack is folded and stitched.
What is a signature?
A signature is a group of sheets folded together as one section. A small booklet is usually a single signature stitched through the spine. For thicker books you fold several signatures and bind them side by side — enter your sheets-per-signature to see how many sections you will have.
