The film, “HeARTh – Art for Older People at Home,” showcases the innovative initiative that connects professional artists with older people in Mayo, fostering creativity, human connection, and joy.
Founded in 2009 by artists Deirdre Walsh and Breda Mayock, HeARTh brings one-on-one art workshops to the participants’ homes, providing high-quality art materials and personalized mentorship to explore painting, drawing, and nature-inspired creativity.
Addressing Loneliness Through Art
- The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) found that loneliness among adults aged 60+ more than doubled during the first COVID-19 lockdown, with depressive symptoms surging from under 10% in 2018 to 25% in 2021.
- Research highlights the urgent need to address social isolation, and HeARTh offers a meaningful and creative lifeline to alleviate loneliness and depression.
Feedback from families, artists, and participants highlights significant benefits in alleviating loneliness and depression, including improved mental health and increased social connections.
A Unique Approach to Arts and Health
