A New Hub for Artistic Expression: ArtWorks Cincinnati’s $12 Million Headquarters

Located in the heart of Walnut Hills, Cincinnati’s new headquarters for the non-profit organization ArtWorks is set to open its doors on April 26. This state-of-the-art facility serves as a vibrant sanctuary for artistic expression, boasting multiple art studios and a wide range of creative spaces.

About ArtWorks

  • ArtWorks is one of the largest employers of local artists in the region.
  • The organization has a long history, dating back to 1898, and has been a driving force in preserving the city’s artistic heritage.
  • Under the leadership of CEO and artistic director Colleen Houston, ArtWorks has continued to evolve and grow, while remaining committed to its mission of promoting artistic expression and supporting local artists.

As Colleen Houston explained, “We used to paint park benches back when we were under tents. This new facility is a space to celebrate creativity and nurture the next generation of artists.”

“This is a space to celebrate creativity and nurture the next generation of artists,” Houston said. “We’ve revitalized the 116-year-old structure in Walnut Hills, transforming it into a vibrant sanctuary for artistic expression.”

A Hub for Community Engagement

  • ArtPark, located across the street from the headquarters, has also been brought back to life.
  • The organization plans to host community events, art workshops, and more between the headquarters and ArtPark.
  • According to Houston, “Probably 30 years ago, for a lot of creatives, they felt like they needed to go to New York or even California if you wanted to have a creative career.”

However, ArtWorks is committed to mentoring local artists aged 14 to 24, fostering creativity and providing support. As Simon Schubert, a mural studio artist and UC student, noted, “Knowing that places like this exist definitely gives me a lot of hope.”

The Importance of Art Spaces

  • Art spaces like the new headquarters are vital to the community, providing a hub for artists to connect and share their work.
  • They offer a platform for artists to showcase their talents, receive feedback and support, and learn from others.
  • As Schubert emphasized, “there needs to be a hub where artists can connect” and ArtWorks provides just that.

“Community members are also encouraged to engage with the art at the headquarters,” Houston explained. “We want to bring everyone together to unleash their creative potential.”
