The Backstory of the Meet the Artist Series
The Meet the Artist series was born out of a desire to support the local art community in the aftermath of the devastating wildfire that ravaged Lahaina in 2022. The event was created by a group of local artists, art enthusiasts, and community leaders who came together to provide a platform for local artists to showcase their work and raise funds for the affected community.
The event will take place on October 15th at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

The devastating Maui fires of 2023 left a trail of destruction in their wake, with hundreds of homes and businesses destroyed, including the studios of many local artists. Taryn Alessandro, a well-known artist and advocate for the arts, was among those who lost her own studio and hundreds of paintings. The loss was not only financial but also emotional, as Alessandro had spent years building her collection and had a deep connection to the art community.
A New Chapter: Supporting Artists in Need
In the aftermath of the fires, Alessandro devoted herself to collecting and distributing art supplies and financial assistance to artists who lost their homes and studio spaces. Her efforts were instrumental in helping many artists to recover and rebuild. Alessandro’s dedication to the arts community was evident in her willingness to go above and beyond to support those in need.
